Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Dr Cemil Tugay continued his inspections in the region today, following the fires that broke out in Karşıyaka Yamanlar region and affected a large area. He inspected the Happiness Forest in Zübeyde Hanım Neighbourhood of Karşıyaka Municipality, which has an area of 98 thousand square metres and acts as a barrier between the forest area and settlements. Mayor Tugay, who examined the forest, which mostly consists of fire-resistant cypress trees as well as trees such as pistachio pine and cemetery pine, received information from experts on what kind of work can be done to save the area.

Treatment method will be determined for the survival of the trees
Evaluating the work to be carried out in the area with Prof. Dr. Koray Velibeyoğlu, President of Izmir Planning Agency (IZPA), Prof. Dr. Serdar Gökhan Şenol, Member of IZPA Scientific Board, and Müge Deniz Bal, Head of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Parks and Gardens Department, Mayor Tugay said, ‘We need to save the trees here. What can we do to save the trees and keep them alive? This is our concern. What kind of treatment can we apply for the trees to live? Let's make a detailed study and then take action.’

Severely burnt parts will be pruned
Prof. Dr. Serdar Gökhan Şenol stated that they will prune the severely burnt parts of the trees and said, ‘Let's open around the tree. Let's apply a water regime with feeding for rooting and support. The trees are in stress mode right now. Water will be given in the first stage. Feeding will be applied to the green part. It will be determined which of the trees in the area will be pruned and how. Then, bottom and top applications will be decided,’ he said.

Mayor Tugay also examined the 252,600 square metre City Forest, which was also created by Karşıyaka Municipality in 2021. It was seen that the area, which contains trees such as needle, black and blue cypress, ash, red pine, carob and linden, was largely burnt. After the teams prepare a report on the region, the work will be prioritised and work will be initiated. In this context, studies on citizen science applications and advanced imaging techniques related to tree care and damage assessment will be carried out with the support of the Izmir Planning Agency Science Board for the improvement of burnt areas.
