CLIMATE AND SUSTAINABILITY POLICIES OFFICE

The Climate and Sustainability Policy Office within the Izmir Planning Agency (IZPA) is dedicated to advancing the city’s environmental, social, and economic sustainability. The office focuses on developing strategic solutions to combat climate change, strengthening Izmir’s resilience, livability, and sustainability.

Sustainability represents an understanding of development that takes into account not only the needs of today but also those of future generations. However, climate change poses one of the greatest threats to this vision, demanding proactive strategies from local governments for efficient resource management and social welfare. IZPA Climate and Sustainability Policies Office, with the awareness of this responsibility, produces sustainable solutions for Izmir at the local level.

Green Transformation and Cooperation with Local Authorities

The Office encourages the implementation of climate-friendly practices in cooperation with local authorities to help Izmir achieve its environmental goals. Resource efficiency, energy conservation, and carbon emission reduction lie at the heart of Izmir’s green transformation. This transition is multifaceted, encompassing environmental, economic, and social dimensions.

Strategic Consultancy and Capacity Building

IZPA Climate and Sustainability Policies Office provides strategic consultancy services to Izmir Metropolitan Municipality and its municipal subsidiaries in the processes of complying with international environmental agreements and achieving climate targets. It also organises trainings and workshops to increase the capacity of local governments on climate action, sustainability and resource management.

The Office monitors the environmental, social and economic performance of projects across Izmir. It carries out impact measurement and management activities to ensure that these projects are progressing in line with sustainability goals. In this way, the impacts on the city and society are continuously analysed and improvement processes are quickly put in place.

Gevrek Model and Gevrek Economy Action Lab (GEAL)

The Gevrek Model, developed by IZPA, introduces an innovative framework for sustainable development in Izmir, guiding the city toward a socially and ecologically equitable future. Through the Gevrek Economy Action Lab (GEAL), this model is translated into actionable steps that enhance the impact and sustainability of local projects, ensuring Izmir’s progression as an ecologically sound and socially inclusive city.

The office aids local governments in establishing sustainability frameworks and ensures ongoing monitoring. Sustainability reporting encompasses both adherence to international standards and performance assessments of local authorities, a critical process for tracking Izmir’s advancement toward its sustainability objectives.

Izmir's Green Transformation Leadership

IZPA Climate and Sustainability Policies Office leads Izmir's green transformation process, ensuring that the city achieves its social and economic sustainability goals as well as its environmental goals. Efforts in key areas such as resource efficiency, energy conservation, and carbon footprint reduction are instrumental in driving Izmir’s progress toward sustainable development.

Izmir Planning Agency's Climate and Sustainability Policies Office plays a critical role in helping Izmir to achieve its sustainable development goals through innovative approaches. Through projects such as the Gevrek Model and GEAL, it aims to make Izmir's future more equitable and sustainable in environmental, social and economic terms. In this context, it will continue to support Izmir's steps towards becoming a resilient, liveable and sustainable city.
